SHAH ALAM - Despite different eras, grooves and musical tastes, Malaysians need to defend their independence together through the spirit of patriotism and understanding regardless of race, background and political ideology.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said lately, he had seen young people becoming more fond of singing Standing in The Eyes of The World by Malaysian rock queen Nor Zila Aminuddin or Ella and 'Negaraku' by Faizal Tahir.

"Today is a historic date, Aug 31, 2023. Our country will celebrate National Day in conjunction with the 66 years since Malaysia, which we all love achieved independence.

"In the past, moments like this were celebrated by singing the independence songs such as 'Tanggal 31', 'Warisan', 'Bahtera Merdeka' and the likes, but now, young people have a different taste," he wrote on Facebook today.

However, Zahid called on all Malaysians to unite and strongly support the spirit of unity based on the Malaysia Madani agenda for the well-being and prosperity of the people and the country.

He said that it needs to be done in line with the theme of the 2023 National Day 2023; 'Malaysia Madani, Tekad Perpaduan Penuhi Harapan'.
