Don't forget the foundation of national independence – Muhyiddin
FARHANA ABD KADIRSHAH ALAM - Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin reminds Malaysians not to forget the foundation of the national independence built on the terms of racial rights that had been mutually agreed upon by previous leaders.
The Pagoh Member of Parliament said that compliance with the social contract had become the basis for Malaysians of multiple races and religions to live in peace and harmony.
Among those terms are the special position of the Malay Rulers, the special rights of the Malays, Islam as the Federal Religion, Malay as the national language and citizenship rights for non-Malays with the conditions stipulated in the Federal Constitution.
"The peace and harmony achieved had given space for efforts to fill in the country's independence.
"This includes driving development and economic progress that has raised the standard of living of the people from a backward and poor life to a more advanced and comfortable life," he said in a statement on Facebook yesterday.
Muhyiddin said in conjunction with the National Day, it is appropriate to commemorate and appreciate the service of previous national leaders in fighting for the country's independence.
He pointed out that the 66 years since the country had achieved its independence had proven that Malaysia had successfully maneuvered through various phases of development and progress.
"Regardless of which government governs the country, the terms that form the basis of the country's independence and the progress of this nation continue to be defended and implemented through clear government policies or programmes.
"May Malaysia continue to be peaceful, prosperous and harmonious," he wished.
