National Day celebrations still on amidst Pulai by-election campaign
JOHOR BAHRU - In the midst of campaigning for the Pulai parliamentary seat by-election, the National Day celebrations have not been forgotten with various programmes being held at the community level in the constituency which has became a platform for candidates to woo voters.
Pakatan Harapan candidate Suhaizan Kaiat said on the fifth day of campaigning, the itinerary also included attending the pre-National Day celebrations organised by local residents.
He said that besides being able to go down to the ground to meet the people, the programmes also proved that the spirit of unity of the people in Johor, especially in Pulai, remains intact, even though they have different political backgrounds.
"Johoreans are moderate people even in politics, so there is no issue of extreme factionalism, instead we celebrate National Day together," he told reporters after attending a pre-National Day celebration programme organised by the residents of Kampung Pengkalan Merin, Pulai here today.
He said he will participate in several National Day programmes around Pulai tonight in conjunction with the National Day celebration tomorrow.
The 66th National Day celebration at the Johor state level will be held tomorrow in Simpang Renggam, simultaneously with the Federal level which will be held in Putrajaya.
In the Pulai parliamentary by-election, Suhaizan is facing a three-cornered fight that features Zulkifli Jaafar of PN and Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi who is contesting as an independent candidate.
The Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections are being held following the death of their incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who was also the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, on July 23.
The Election Commission (EC) has set polling day for both the by-elections on Sept 9, with early voting on Sept 5. - BERNAMA
