By-elections: Candidates advised not to speak on 3R issues during campaigning

JOHOR - All candidates for the by-election (PRK) Parliament and the State Legislature of Simpang Jeram are advised not to touch on issues involving religion, races, and royal institutions (3R) while campaigning to maintain public order.

According to the media spokesman for the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters, Superintendent Ibrahim Mat Som, action will be taken against all parties, regardless of the party, if it is found to touch on any of the issues.

"Every candidate who wishes to hold an election campaign must comply with the provisions of law under Section 24B(3) of the Electoral Offences Act 1954 and not touch on the 3R issues.

"In the event of any issues arising, any party may refer to the police for further action under the existing law," he said in a statement on Monday.

For the record, Johor police have approved two talk permits and 18 campaign permits for the Pulai Parliament, as well as two talk permits and three campaign permissions for the Simpang Jeram State Legislature, in accordance with the by-elections.

However, it is understood that no investigation documents have been filed in regards to the subject up until now.

Johor police also encouraged all parties and followers to respect one another and not destroy any political party's posters, flags, or fabric by removing or burning the equipment.

Such an act is treacherous and illegal, and it may result in prosecution under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to five years in prison, a fine, or both.
