Salahuddin's influence strong in Pulai but efforts needed to counter green wave, warn analysts
SHAH ALAM: Political analysts are warning that despite the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub's solid reputation in Pulai and Simpang Jeram, the prospect of a "green wave" setting a significant presence in the seat remains a closely contested matter.
Pacific Research Centre of Malaysia principal adviser Dr Oh Ei Sun said Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) has a good chance of winning the by-elections in Pulai and state seat Simpang Jeram.
“However, they have to work more diligently to protect the position they hold and leave nothing to chance. This is because the green wave is determined to build a more substantial foothold in Johor through these constituencies.
“Eventhough Salahuddin was a popular politician in the country and well liked not only in Amanah but the entire PH-BN alliance, they would still need to work hard to retain these constituencies," he told Sinar Daily.
Oh said at this point, it is still a close call to predict who will win the by-elections in Pulai and state seat in Simpang Jeram between PH-BN and Perikatan Nasional.
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) associate professor of political Science Dr Syaza Shukr said PH-BN, particularly Amanah, have a good chance of retaining their seats in Pulai and Simpang Jeram.
“However, PN still has a good chance to increase their vote and they could even win the election," she said, adding that the seat is a sronghold of PH-BN.
The Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections are set be held on Sept 9 following the death of the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living minister.
