SHAH ALAM - Gerakan has expressed its support for Imam Nawawi's 40 Hadith Appreciation module in Islamic religious schools, however, it should not be extended to non-Muslim students.

Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau said the initial statements made by concerned parties were deemed too broad and potentially causing anxiety among the public, especially non-Muslim parents and students.

He said the government failed to explain the process of the implementation, raising anxiety within the public.

"I believe that every element of spirituality and religion should be incorporated into the education syllabus, that is clear. What is important is the explanation process regarding the approach.

"It is only hoped that the Education Ministry will stick to its minister's statement and give assurance not to extend this module to non-Muslim students," he said in a statement today.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek recently said that a pilot programme of 40 Imam Nawawi Hadiths Appreciation Module will be implemented involving Muslim teachers and students in 61 National Religious Secondary Schools (SMKA) and 228 Government Aided Religious Schools (SABK) throughout the country.

The implementation of the module is targeted at Muslim teachers and students with the aim of fostering the spirit of compassion, love and empowering religious understanding.

Lau spoke on the importance of respecting another's culture and religion in a multi cultural Malaysia.

He said as long as such studies do not hinder or cause difficulties for others, it is acceptable for Muslims to appreciate the principles of purity and seek guidance for life, with the belief that it can contribute to the moral development of the younger generation.

"I hope the education ministry will approach stakeholders including parents with an explanation of the plan, impact and journey," he pointed.
