KOTA BHARU - Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has created a hand-painted Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) measuring 201.2 metres as a symbolic tribute to the 66th Independence Day, which falls on Aug 31.

UMK's Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Razli Che Razak mentioned that the flag was hand-painted by all 28 staff members of UMK's administrative units and it took two weeks to complete this masterpiece.

For efficient execution, he said they divided the white fabric among the administrative staff.

"All staff members enthusiastically participated in hand-painting work before the pieces were assembled," he said, after attending the launching of the university-level Independence Month at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan.

Razli said numerous programmes are planned throughout the independence month, including cooking porridge, merdeka-themed journeys and sports competitions.

"We've also retained traditional themes from last year to enhance the patriotic spirit among the university students," he added.

He emphasised the Malaysian flag would be displayed around the university to ignite the flame of patriotism and honour the efforts of all UMK students and staff.

During the event, around 500 spectators gathered at the Astaka Building in UMK's Sports Centre to witness performance, a convoy of patriotic journey participants, acts and a parade featuring a hand-painted Jalur Gemilang.
