JOHOR BAHRU - The nomination process for the Pulai parliamentary and the Simpang Jeram state by-elections, which took place this morning, went smoothly without any untoward incidents reported.
Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the situation at both nomination centres, at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim here and in Muar, were also reported to be calm and under control, despite thousands of supporters from the contesting parties gathering in the area.
"Based on police monitoring from the operation room, the situation is calm and nothing untoward happened," he told reporters when met at the nomination centre for the Pulai parliamentary by-election at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim here, today.
He reminded candidates, supporters and leaders of political parties involved in the by-elections to comply with all the rules and regulations during campaigning, including applying for a permit to hold their "ceramah” (political talks) and not touch on the 3Rs (religion, royalty and race) issues.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Sept 9 as polling day for both by-elections with early voting on Sept 5.
The by-elections were called after the P161 Pulai parliamentary seat and N13 Simpang Jeram state became vacant following the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub who was the incumbent for both seats.
The Amanah deputy president and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister died on July 23 due to a brain haemorrhage. - BERNAMA
