PN most likely to conquer Simpang Jeram seat with a slim majority, chances are low in Pulai, says pol analysts
SHAH ALAM - Perikatan Nasional's (PN) chance off winning in the in Pulai parliamentary seems slim, however, it will most likely conquer the Simpang Jeram seat with a slim majority if there is an increase in Malay voters, says analysts.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) political science lecturer, Dr Nur Ayuni Mohd Isa said based on the last state the elections, it can be expected that 70 per cent of Umno voters will side with PN while 30 per cent will side with Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Ayuni said based on the wave that occurred in the recent state elections, it shows that there is an increase in support of the Malay majority for PN.
"For the Simpang Jeram seat which will be contested by a Pas candidate, PN will most likely win, however, with a slim majority if Umno voters favours PN
"The Johor by-election this year will also signal to the Umno leadership whether the party's grassroots approve of the PH and Barisan Nasional (BN) collaboration or not," she said when contacted by Sinar Daily
However, Ayuni said that PH and BN have a strong chance in winning the Pulai seat due to its past track record.
She elaborated that the chances for PH-BN to seize back Pulai is high due to its diverse voter population of Malays, Chinese and Indians.
"It is quite difficult for PN to win in Pulai based on PH's track record of previous victories.
"Most likely PH will still win this parliamentary seat, but the majority is expected to decrease," she said.
On the candidates chosen to contest for the seat, Ayuni said that voters would place on the coalitions instead of the candidates.
"The candidates by PH-BN and PN are great in terms of educational background, also with good work experience.
"However, for the by-election this time, the priority by the voters will be given to the competing coalitions namely PH-BN and PN, compared to the candidates," she said.
Meanwhile, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Political Science Associate Professor Dr Syaza Shukri said PN has a great chance in winning the Pelangai state seat in Pahang.
"In Pelangai however there is a better chance for PN because of the Pas influence in the state," she said.
However, for the Pulai seat, she stressed that Amanah candidates have a higher chance to win over PN.
"There is slightly a bigger chance for Amanah candidates to win over PN.
"This is because of the influence of the late Datuk Seri Salahudin Ayob and the area is not typically a Pas stronghold ," she said.
