SHAH ALAM - Selangor police chief has announced a significant increase through Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) to 300 arrests per month.

Citing statistics, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the MPV arrests in January stood at 152, which then steadily increased to 200 by June and further to 244 in July, showcasing the role played by frontliners.

“If we empower them with letters of appreciation and motivational talks, we could empower them with certain specific skills.

For instance, he said an arrests involves various stages of engagement, including dialogue and non-lethal methods like pepper spray or tasers but said the use of firearms is the last resort and depends on the severity of the situation.

Commenting further, he said there are plans with the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department to empower the frontliners.

“We have done this for five months and we can see the results that they are arresting more people because these are the people that are on the ground and engage with people directly to nab red-handed on whoever has done any crime," he said.

The ultimate goal, he said is to reduce crime, allowing the police to focus more on investigations and less on addressing crimes in progress.

Hussein further said providing officers with newer MPVs, such as the Honda Civic, boosts motivation enhances their effectiveness.

“We are on the right track together with my team and also the new MPV Honda Civic would give a good motivation to officers as using old cars would not be as motivated as using a new car.

“These would be continuous and we believe we can achieve better than this. I want to stress again that the safety in Selangor is getting better compared with the previous years as Selangor police committed and would work harder to make the state a better place to live,” he said.
