BENTONG - A sombre atmosphere prevailed at the funeral of Elmina plane crash victim, Khairil Azwan Jamaludin, 43, at the Felda Mempaga 1 Muslim cemetery here today.

Earlier, a van carrying the remains of Khairil Azwan arrived at his parents' home in Felda Mempaga 1 at about 12.55pm and was received by family members, close friends, and acquaintances of the deceased.

Those who arrived to pay their last respects joined in the ‘solat jenazah’ prayers led by Khairil Azwan’s eldest son, Khairul Harisin, 14.

"Thank you to everyone present and for praying for my father, may he be placed among the righteous," he said when reciting the talqin verses.

The remains of Khairil Azwan were buried at the Felda Mempaga 1 Muslim cemetery here at 1.50pm.

Peramu Jaya assemblyman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohd Najib also attended the funeral.

Khairul Harisin, when met by reporters, said the last time he met his father was two weeks ago with his younger brother Khairul Ikhwan, 12.

"Father told us to be useful people and to study hard," said the student of a tahfiz school in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.

Apart from Khairil Azwan who was killed during a plane crash near the Elmina township, Shah Alam, on Thursday at 2.48pm, Pelangai state assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun, four passengers, two crew members as well as two road users namely an e-hailing driver and p-hailing rider also perished in the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Nizar also shared his experience with the late Johari, especially regarding their career as assemblymen.

He described the late Johari as a brother who often shared views and experiences because they both held positions as assemblymen and exco in the state government for the first time.

"We both rose and learnt quickly... He (Johari) was senior, experienced, proactive and quick in making decisions... This set a good example for me as a young leader. We have lost a very dynamic and hardworking figure. Of course, his passing is deeply felt," he said. - BERNAMA
