SHAH ALAM - Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa has declared that healthcare is not a cost, but an investment.

Dr Zaliha said a healthy populace was essential for a contented and productive society.

She pointed out her experience as a family doctor in highlighting the importance of healthcare.

"Healthcare is not a cost, but an investment. A healthy population is a productive population. It is a happy population," she told Sinar Daily, where she announced plans to expedite reforms to the country's healthcare system.

Dr Zaliha said that she is committed to accelerating the reforms outlined in the Health White Paper.

The white paper, which was released in June sets out a 15-year plan for transforming the country's healthcare system.

One of the key tenets of the reform strategy is the strengthening of the primary healthcare sector.

Dr Zaliha said that by bolstering this fundamental aspect, the healthcare system would be able to focus on preventive measures and early interventions.
