MELAKA - The defeat faced by Barisan Nasional (BN), especially Umno, in last Saturday's state elections will be a benchmark for all members to stand firm within the party and strive to rise again.

Umno Supreme Council Member Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the defeat experienced by BN has also been encountered by other parties like Pas and Bersatu before they managed to recover.

He said BN must take such steps to ensure the party does not falter and can move towards improvement.

"We will rise again and build strength for the upcoming general elections after we have assessed our weaknesses and shortcomings," he said after officiating an event at the Seri Negeri Complex in Ayer Keroh on Wednesday.

Rauf, also the Chief Minister, said the statements made by some party leaders linking Umno's demise and the aftermath of cooperating with the Democratic Action Party are merely their personal opinions.

He said Melaka is one of the states governed by a unity government, an example of mutual understanding and benefits between two parties, DAP and BN, that previously had different opinions.

"I urge all party supporters not to be confused by the notion that DAP is out to destroy the Malays.

"In Melaka, they (DAP) are genuinely working to foster unity in building a great state," he said.

In the recent state polls, BN only won 19 out of 108 contested seats, including 2 in Selangor, 14 in Negeri Sembilan, 1 in Kelantan, and 2 in Penang.
