KUALA LUMPUR - Sinar Harian journalist Mohd Izzatul Izuan Tahir has won the Excellence in Print Media Award at the "Red Ribbon Media Awards 2023", organised by the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF).

He won the award for his article titled 'The AIDS War Is Not Over Yet' and received a cash prize of RM5,000, a trophy, and a certificate of recognition.

The award was established to acknowledge journalistic excellence and creativity across all media channels in the efforts to end AIDS.

Mohd Izzatul Izuan said the victory resulted from teamwork among fellow editorial colleagues.

"It aligns with the goals and aspirations of Sinar Harian's staff, who always aim to produce the best and most accurate news reports.

"This victory is the outcome of collective commitment, not just my effort. My colleagues and the editorial team aided it in generating quality news content.

"We are grateful for this award, which indirectly boosts our spirits and motivation to continue delivering high-quality news daily," he told Sinar Harian on Tuesday.

Mohd Izzatul Izuan said that the article revolved around the personal lives of HIV patients who have been living with the virus for years and have faced various stigmas from society.

Meanwhile, Health (Public Health) Deputy Director-General Dr Norhayati Rusli said some patients do not receive antiretroviral treatment due to societal perceptions of the disease.

"The media also play a role in ending AIDS by 2030 through reporting that shapes narratives, influences attitudes, and stimulates public action regarding the virus.

"The information conveyed by the media is undeniable, as they can raise awareness among those affected by HIV and AIDS and encourage them to seek preventive treatment," she said.
