KOTA KINABALU - Jealousy was the reason behind a man's attack on his ex-wife's male friend using an axe, resulting in severe injuries during an incident at the Menara Kinabalu roundabout on Thursday night.

In the 9pm incident, the 39-year-old male victim suffered injuries to his face, hands, and legs, while his 30-year-old female friend managed to escape.

Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the couple was reportedly eating in a car when they were attacked by three men, one of whom used an axe.

"Both managed to escape to the Alamesra Police Station, and the injured victim was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment, while the female friend is safe.

"Initial investigations found that the motive for the attack is believed to be jealousy, as one of the men, identified as 37-year-old Winhal, is the former husband of the involved woman," he said in a statement on Friday.

Mohd Zaidi said that following the incident, the police are actively pursuing the three suspects involved in the attack.

"In addition to Winhal, the other two wanted suspects are identified as 27-year-old Abdel Jalali and another accomplice whose identity is yet to be determined.

"Members of the public with information about the incident are urged to come forward to the nearest police station or contact the investigating officer, Inspector Muhammad Khaidir Zakarian, at 014-8019618," he said.
