PARIS - The holiday lodge in northeastern France where 11 people died in a blaze had not completed a mandatory safety inspection, an official told German news agency (dpa) on Thursday.

The fire tore through the accommodation that catered to adults with disabilities on Wednesday morning. At the time, 28 people were staying at the site in the town of Wintzenheim. A group of 17 people managed to save themselves.

The deputy public prosecutor of the nearby city of Colmar said the holiday lodge had not undergone an obligatory safety inspection and it was unknown whether it was in compliance with safety regulations or not.

In France, establishments that host guests are responsible for complying with safety regulations, with authorities carrying out inspections. - BERNAMA
