KUALA TERENGGANU - Mohd Yasin Muda's plans to vote in the state elections this Saturday were dashed after a fire razed his decades-old home in Kampung Kubang Parit in the wee hours of Thursday.

The fire also consumed the adjacent home of Mohd Yasin's sister, Selamah, 80, in the 6.50am incident.

Mohd Yasin, 55, recounted how his son had spotted smoke in Selamah's house, prompting them to evacuate immediately through a window.

"My sister wasn't home at the time due to being hospitalised, so her house was empty," said Mohd Yasin.

Although deeply saddened by the loss of their lifelong abode, Mohd Yasin and his family are temporarily lodging at a nearby homestay.

He added that he could not vote as essential documents, such as his identification card, had been destroyed in the fire.

The Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received a distress call alerting of the incident at 7.05am before deploying 21 personnel with three fire engines.

Kuala Terengganu BBP chief Rozizah Abni Hajar said the fire was completely extinguished at 8.14am. The cause and extent of the fire's damage is still under investigation.
