Political psychological warfare ahead of state polls
FARHANA ABD KADIRThe intensity of the campaigns for the state elections which will happen in about 48 hours seem to have escalated as each contesting parties begin employing a psychological warfare to convince voters.
The psychological maneuvers being executed could lead to a political tsunami that has the potential to reshape principles and support for parties through various revelations and controversies.
Moreover, with the expanding reach of social media, the battle for voters' minds can swiftly unfold without any restraints.
Kedah Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar said for instance, that the claims by several leaders of Perikatan Nasional (PN) that the central government would change if the coalition won in all the states involved in the polls were merely psychological tactics.
He said the effort was PN's way of maintaining their power in three states, namely Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, besides asserting that the party was increasingly concerned about the 'Kalih Bagi Sama' slogan, which was being well-received by the people.
However, the people were discerning and even though some segments of the society may not exhibit blind loyalty to a particular party, they also contributed to governmental change.
Meanwhile, Bersatu deputy Women chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said PN will utilise all available space and time for campaigning.
She said during these last 48 hours, the party's machinery will strengthen their campaigning methods, whether through physical activities or online platforms.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, on the other hand, announced that the party was intensifying the number of campaign efforts and directing members to commit 200 per cent in seeking voters.
Based on the state elections campaigns in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan, he said the public's support for Barisan Nasional (BN) was increasingly positive.
However, in this challenging period, no political member or candidate should feel complacent with the current level of support while campaigning, as there is a possibility of surprises or unexpected events occurring at the last moment.
The campaign period which will soon end can sometimes create pressure, leading to various false accusations or allegations that are difficult to control.
Therefore, the choice and decision to vote lie in the hands of the people to ensure that the chosen leaders are capable of implementing improvements.
