GLC chairmanship should not be political rewards - Syed Saddiq
BAYAN LEPAS - Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has called for an end to the practice of appointing political leaders to chairmanships of government-linked companies (GLCs).
Syed Saddiq said that GLC chairmanships should be given to professionals who have the skills and experience to manage these companies effectively.
"In 2018, there were no political appointments in GLCs. The leadership positions were held by professionals.
"But today, GLC chairmanships are given to Umno leaders," he said in a speech at a Muda ceramah in Bayan Lepas today.
Syed Saddiq said that this practice is wrong and that it is a form of political patronage.
"We should not treat GLC chairmanships as political rewards.
"These positions should be given to people who are qualified and competent," he said.
Syed Saddiq also said that he had turned down an offer to become a GLC chairman when he was the youth and sports minister.
"I was offered a GLC chairmanship with a salary that was higher than what I was getting as a minister.
"But I turned it down because I believe that GLC chairmanships should be given to professionals," he said.
Syed Saddiq said that he joined politics to serve the people and not to gain power or position.
"I am not interested in positions. I am interested in serving the people," he said.
He urged the people to reject the practice of appointing political leaders to GLC chairmanships and to demand that these positions be given to qualified and competent professionals.
