Muda to be the opposition in Penang if PH-BN wins state polls
BAYAN LEPAS - Muda will be the "people's opposition" in Penang if Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) win the state elections, said its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
Syed Saddiq said that Muda will play the role of a proper opposition to ensure that the voices of the people are heard.
"Let's say the most likely scenario is that the state government will be under PH-BN with a comfortable majority.
"In that case, we will be the people's opposition because we want checks and balances.
"We want to ensure that the people's voices are heard. The precondition is that the PH-BN coalition is in power," he said when met by reporters here today.
Syed Saddiq also said that Muda wants to be a strong alternative to the current government, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
"At the same time, we want to be the voice of the people, a proper alternative and proper opposition where PN will not talk about checks and balances, decentralisation of power, and institutional reforms.
"It would be Muda that will do it," he said.
Commenting on the possibility of a hung state legislative assembly, Syed Saddiq said that Muda's top priority is to work with a coalition that believes in multi-racialism.
"Let's say there is a hung state legislative assembly. In that particular position, Muda's priority is to work with a coalition that believes in multi-racial, multi-religious, and moderate reforms in Malaysia.
"We will not be negotiating for opposition positions. Our priority will be negotiating policies," he added.
