Police investigating death of suspect in Kubang Pasu lockup
JAMLIAH ABDULLAHALOR SETAR - Police are investigating the death of a drug case suspect in Kubang Pasu district police deadquarters lockup, believed to be the result of suicide.
The victim, a 51-year-old man, was found hanging himself in a locker at 5.30am earlier today, Utusan Malaysia reports.
He had been remanded for seven days from Aug 4 until 10 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The body was taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) for an autopsy.
Kedah Police Chief, Datuk Fisol Salleh said the case has been classified as sudden death report.
"As an initial step, all members on duty during the incident will be temporarily transferred to another branch until the investigation is completed.
"The investigation will also ensure that all administrative instructions related to lockup and Lockup Rules 1953 are followed.
"The police will ensure the investigation is transparent and fair because it involves public interest," he said.
Meanwhile, on another matter, Fisol also said that a total of 6,839 officers, police personnel and their spouses carried out the responsibility of casting early votes in the state election today throughout Kedah.
