Reducing domestic violence cases, empowering women among Sg Pinang candidate’s aim

JELUTONG - Reducing domestic violence cases are among the new changes Penang DAP Women Chief Lim Siew Khim would like to bring to the women’s community in Penang.

In an exclusive interview with Sinar Daily, Lim said he team developed a ‘First Support Point’ at her service centre to assist women with domestic violent cases.

“A lot of domestic violence cases are unrecorded and it is difficult for us to really gauge the severity, however, we also have many women that have stepped out of their shells and contributed in so many ways in Sungai Pinang.

“We have the Women and Family Development Committee, which organises programmes with families and children on the community level.

“All these are for us to reach out to as many women and families as well as encourage them to have meaningful and healthy relationships with one another,” she said.

Lim further said that she would personally handle domestic violence cases and had successfully mitigated such cases.

“I will personally handle cases of domestic violence which comes to me and had been successful in mitigating those cases.

“I want domestic violence perpetrators to know that I and the whole community of Sungai Pinang are against them and we shall provide all the necessary support to the victims,” she said.

Commenting further, Lim said she would like to work more on narrowing the gender gaps and protecting women's rights.

“I’d like to continue my efforts in women’s empowerment, leadership and representation. I wish to do more in narrowing the gender gaps and protecting women's rights,” she said.

Lim further said that she would like to work with Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) on enhancing childcare services in Penang.

“I also want to focus on childcare services in Penang, as studies have shown that childcare service is the biggest enable for mothers to stay in the workforce.

“For this, I shall work very closely with the Penang Women’s Development Corporation, PWDC, which is spearheading this effort,” she said.
