Elections are not a TikTok contest, choose your representative wisely - Nurul Izzah

LANGKAWI - PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar has urged voters in Langkawi to choose their representatives wisely, saying that elections are not a contest to crown a TikTok entertainer.

"Elections today are very challenging, especially in the age of TikTok (social media).

"It feels like we're being dragged into who can be the most crude and uncouth.

“Notwithstanding the importance of engaging youth on TikTok, one which I myself have to work on, we also don’t want voting to be based on TikTok alone.

“It’s equally a challenge for us to be present in channels that all our voters frequently access, so that our message as well as our worth and ability to persuade will not be lost," she said at a Sembang Santai Bersama Orang Muda programme here last night.

Nurul said voters should elect an assemblyman who wants to work, a person who can look for investments and further develop the economy. She also stressed that Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional's (BN) hard work for a win in Kedah is to ensure the people's well-being.

"The state should be administered by a government that is in unison with the federal government in order to ensure all planned projects can be carried out easily, as some require the federal government's support.

"So vote for an assemblyman who can build and maintain ties with the federal government; do not give room to individuals from parties that are not likeminded," she added.

In her speech, Nurul also warned voters against being swayed by the crude and uncouth behavior of some politicians on social media.

She said that such behaviour is not representative of the values of the people of Kedah.

"We are a people who are known for our hospitality and our sense of community.

"We do not need leaders who are crude and uncouth. We need leaders who can represent our values and who can work to improve the lives of the people of Kedah," she said.
