Asean countries agree to develop sustainable cities

HANOI, Vietnam - The governors and mayors of cities from ASEAN member countries signed a joint declaration to foster the development of sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities in the region on Wednesday. The signing of the joint declaration took place during the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC) and ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF) held in Jakarta, Indonesia on Aug 1-2.

"The event witnessed the participation of approximately 500 attendees, including governors, mayors, and representatives from regional governments of the ASEAN countries,” Vietnam News Agency reported. In his concluding remarks, Acting Governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, emphasised that the joint declaration represents an agreement aimed at strengthening intra-bloc cooperation to establish sustainable urban living, thereby supporting the development of the ASEAN community. Delegates expressed their belief that sustainable urban development will reinforce ASEAN's common goals and further enhance its position as a regional economic growth centre. - BERNAMA
