Muda yet to decide to participate in Pulai, Simpang Jeram by-elections
SYAMILAH ZULKIFLISEREMBAN - The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) has yet to decide whether to participate in the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections in Johor on Sept 9.
Its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said now is not the right time to consider it.
"I think this is a period for us to pay respect to the deceased. Matters relating to the by-elections are not in our discussion because we want to respect the deceased.
"I told Muda that this is not the time to consider it. Our focus is on the state elections, and in any case, we have to respect the services of the deceased," he said at a press conference at the Negeri Sembilan Muda Office on Thursday.
On Thursday, the Election Commission (EC) set the polling day for the Pulai Parliamentary and the Simpang Jeram state assembly by-elections on Sept 9.
The nomination day and early voting dates for the two seats have been set to Aug 26 and Sept 5, respectively.
The Pulai and the Simpang Jeram state by-elections were triggered due to the unexpected death of the incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, on July 23.
Salahuddin, 61, also the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah, at 9.23pm after being put to sleep following surgery due to brain haemorrhage.
