Women's position in the East Coast should not be overlooked - INOS

KUALA LUMPUR - The position of women in the East Coast especially Terengganu could not be overlooked in realising the economic direction of the state.

Terengganu Universiti Malaysia Oceanography and Environment Institute (INOS) director Associate Professor Effi Helmy Ariffin informed it was due to the women's involvement in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) especially in the sale of 'keropok lekor' ( Keropok lekor is a Malaysian snack and a specialty of the Terengganu) in the state, its seen as having a significant impact.

"The uniqueness of Terengganu throughout the beach especially (near) our neighbours Kelantan, women play an important role towards contributing towards the economy, especially with the sale of keropok lekor, women take on these roles of improving their family's economy," he said

Effi Helmy said issues relating to the environment such as the issue of erosion and other related disasters near the beach areas, the effects were not only felt by men.

" The effects are also felt by women who are working to increase the family economy," he told Awani.

He urged candidates or parties contesting in the state election to not to be left behind and focus on campaigning in the beach areas.

He shared that the environmental and climate change in Malaysia were always set aside in political campaigns as its effects were not felt by everyone, except the areas that were constantly flooded or affected by storms.

"There are various issuesm, but during the calm seasons, people only view the economic, employment and the local issues of the area," he said. - Awani
