Police probing case of woman assaulted on staircase

GEORGETOWN - The police are currently investigating a viral video on social media showing a woman being assaulted by several individuals on a staircase.

The Northeast District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong stated that the video which is 5 minutes and 39 seconds long was discovered circulating on the Facebook account 'Wyman Wyman' at 12 noon on July 31.

According to the police, the video came to their attention after receiving a report from a local 51-year-old man, who claimed that the victim in the video is his daughter.

"We received the report from the man on the night of July 30, stating that the woman being assaulted is his daughter.

"According to him, his daughter has been away from home since last December and has not returned until now, due to family issues," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added that the man also claimed that he has been unable to contact his daughter since then.

"After verification, it is indeed true that the video was uploaded on the mentioned Facebook account, but the exact location of the incident could not be determined.

"The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code (rioting) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services," he said.

"Members of the public who have information related to the incident can come forward to the Northeast District Police Headquarters to assist in the investigation," he said.
