Twitter drama: Did Jocelyn Chia's father truly disown her?
SINAR DAILY REPORTERSHAH ALAM - A Twitter account claiming to be Jocelyn Chia's father recently posted that he has disowned the controversial comedian.
The tweet on Anthony Chia Whye Liang's account last Tuesday read, "I publicly announce here for the first time that me and my beloved wife Shirley will disown our daughter @JocelynChia from here onwards until the day of our death.
"Her doing shows my total failure in raising her to be a better person for society. The public deserved better than this."
However, netizens appeared unconvinced and refused to believe that the account belonged to Chia's father.
Some netizens pointed out that the account was created just a few days ago and that the tweets were all in English, even though Chia's father is reportedly a Malaysian.
Others said that the tweets were too well-written to be the work of an elderly man.
Still others said that they simply did not believe that a father would disown his own daughter, no matter what she had done.
Meanwhile, a small number of netizens, mainly elderly Malaysians, expressed sympathy for Chia's father.
"As a Malaysian, I am angry with her," one comment read.
"But as a parent, I understand your feelings."
Another commented said, "I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive her one day."
It is unclear whether the tweet was actually from Chia's father.
However, the controversy has sparked a debate about the role of parents in raising their children and the limits of free speech.
Chia is a Singaporean-American comedian who has been making waves in the comedy world with her controversial stand-up routines.
Recently, she made a joke about missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
However, Chia has defended her right to free speech, saying that she is simply trying to make people laugh.
