SHAH ALAM - A 59-year-old man died while being held in custody at the Setiawangsa police station lockup on Wednesday.

Federal Police Integrity and Compliance Department Director Commissioner Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said the detainee's cellmate found him struggling to breathe at around 11.30pm.

"The hospital was immediately contacted and an ambulance arrived to transport the man to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment.

"The doctor from the hospital's emergency and trauma department pronounced him dead at 12.10am," he said in a statement today.

Azri said a post-mortem would be conducted on Thursday to ascertain the cause of death.

He said the man was initially arrested on July 6 under Section 39(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He was further detained on July 18 after he was found linked to another case.

"Federal Police's death in custody investigation unit (USJKT) will investigate the matter," he said.
