State government to inspect telco towers, ensure towers safety and stability - Amirudin
SHAH ALAM - Caretaker Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari gave his assurance that he would look into the issue of the 613 Yakin Telesel unlicensed telecommunication towers, reportedly illegally built in Selangor over the past 10 years.
Amirudin said Yakin Telesel Sdn Bhd (YTSB) is currently cooperating with the local authorities to check on the existing data.
YTSB functions as the lead coordinator to coordinate the planning, implementation and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure services throughout Selangor.
YTSB also serves as a one-stop centre to process applications to build telco towers in Selangor.
“I would have to check as these matters are under the Yakin Telesel, it is a part of their responsibility to ensure the safety and stability of the towers built as to not endanger the community.
“We are worried for those that are built illegally because it involves a large and structure which has the potential to collapse and could be dangerous.
“The guidelines made by Yakin Telesel is comprehensive, we need to establish if these were built on government land or personal land first.,” Amirudin told reporters after attending a Town Hall session at Karangkraf Mall yesterday
Last year, the Star reported that an audit in December 2021 revealed 613 unregistered or unlicensed telecommunications structures in Selangor.
“If action is not taken, this will result in a projected loss of RM1.2mil in revenue per year for the 613 structures.
“There is also the risk to public safety, whether residents or motorists, as the planning and construction of public infrastructure facilities such as transmission towers, are subject to local council laws.
“The state government’s efforts to embrace 5G technology will also be disrupted,” Selangor local government, public transportation and new village development committee chairman Ng Sze Han was reported as saying.
