In a statement today, Lau clarified that the administrator of his Twitter account @Dominiclauhc was "surprised" with the tweet which was posted at 12.37pm today.
"The Twitter account of Lau was hacked by irresponsible parties this afternoon, for your information, the tweet did not come from Lau or an authorised administrator.
"The administrator is tracking the cause of this incident. For the time being, a new safety protocol had been activated including changing the password on all his social media accounts," the statement stated.
Lau also said he would lodge a police report soon, and extended his condolences to Salahuddin's family over the death of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, who was also Pulai member of Parliament.
Salahuddin died yesterday at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star, Kedah, after undergoing surgery to treat a brain haemorrhage.
The insensitive tweet had garnered attention from Netizens who were angry that such a remark was made.
The tweet had read "Is it OK if I contest for the Pulai by-election?"
Among the earliest to see the tweet before it was deleted was Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan. "He was just buried, the Gerakan president is already tweeting as such. You are not getting away @Dominiclauhc," he said, attaching a screenshot of the tweet.
Meanwhile user @ByJasonNg pointed out that every deleted post would come with a "this tweet was deleted by the tweet author" notice.
"Wait, Lau claimed the tweet as 'fake' and expect it to work?" he had questioned.
