AGC denies selective prosecution based on political motives

SHAH ALAM - The Attorney General’s Chambers denies allegations of selective prosecution based on political motives and persecution against any individual who commits an offence under the provisions of the law.

Therefore, the Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun, stressed that the decision to press charges is based on the evidence and facts of investigations, not on the influences of any party or other factors.

"The decision is based on the evidence from investigation papers; it is impartial and guided by the core principles of integrity to ensure that victims, witnesses, defendants, and the public receive proper justice.

"It is in line with the jurisdiction of the Attorney General provided under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution," he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Idrus stated that if there is strong evidence and proof that any individual has committed an offense under any provision of the law, that person will be charged by the Attorney General's Office.

"It is based on legal provisions regardless of the status and background of the accused individuals," he said.

On Tuesday, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was reported to have criticised the legal action taken against Perikatan Nasional (PN) Election Director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, describing it as selective prosecution.

Previously, Sanusi was arrested at a hotel in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, and charged with two offences under the Sedition Act 1948.

The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, stated that the police took action to arrest Sanusi after several phone calls made to him were not answered.
