SEGAMAT - A Year 5 student sustained facial and bodily injuries after allegedly being caned by the school headmistress for failing to complete his homework.

Segamat District Police Chief Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the matter was reported to the police on Tuesday via the Segamat District Police Facebook page at 11pm.

"A police report was made by the victim's mother at 12.10am, saying that her son was injured on the left side of the neck and shoulder, and scratched on the cheek due to being struck by a female headmistress in her 50s.

"Preliminary investigations found that the student was hit for failing to complete his schoolwork and being unattentive during lessons at school," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Following the report, the headmistress was called in for questioning to assist with the investigation, which is being carried out under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

The police are completing the investigation papers pending to be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office for further action.
