Kuala Terengganu by-election to be held on Aug 12 with state election
PUTRAJAYA - The polling day for the Kuala Terengganu P036 by-election will be held simultaneously with the Terengganu state election on Aug 12, said Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Ghani Salleh.
He said the nomination date for the by-election will be July 29, while the early polling date is on Aug 8.
The Kuala Terengganu by-election was called after the Kuala Terengganu Election Court dismissed the Pas MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim's victory in the 15th general election (GE15).
The decision was made by High Court Judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril on June 27 after allowing the election petition filed by the BN candidate from the Parliament seat, Mohd Zubir Embong.
Amzad won the Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary seat after obtaining 63,016 votes, defeating Mohd Zubir (22,109 votes), Pejuang candidate Mohamad Abu Bakar Muda (481 votes) and PH candidate Raja Datuk Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad Shah (10,946 votes).
Abdul Ghani said the campaign date was set for 14 days after the candidate nomination declaration until 11.59pm on Aug 11.
"All categories for postal votes, domestic and overseas, for the Kuala Terengganu by-election, would be opened starting today," he said.
Abdul Ghani said the closing date for the application of 1A categories is on July 26, while July 21 was set for categories 1B and 1C.
Category 1A is for election officers, staff and EC officers, as well as media officers.
Malaysians overseas represented the 1B category and 1C was agencies and organisations.
He said the application for postal votes approved for the four State Assembly areas under the Kuala Terengganu Parliament would be given the Parliament ballot papers.
Abdul Ghani said the EC has elected an election management officer aided by 19 assistants.
"To observe campaign activities, the EC will remain with four same Election Campaign Enforcement Teams (PP-KPR) from 252 teams established for the elections as how it was announced previously," he said.
Abdul Ghani explained The Kuala Terengganu City Council Tower Banquet Hall will be made as the candidate nomination centre (PPC) sharing the premise with the Ladang N15 State Assembly.
The PPC for Wakaf Mempelam N13 State Assembly, Bandar N14 and Batu Buruk N16 remained as the previous location set.
"The Kuala Terengganu Parliament Official Vote Tallying Centre (PPRU) and the four State Assemblies under it would use the Kuala Terengganu City Council Tower Banquet Hall," he said.
