SHAH ALAM - Selangor police are investigating the case of a Myanmar refugee activist and her family, who were allegedly kidnapped by men from their home in Ampang Jaya on July 4.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the police have received a report regarding the incident.

"An investigation under the Missing Persons Police Enquiry Paper (KEP) has been initiated," he said when contacted today.

According to reports from the media, an international Non-Governmental Organisation affiliated with Human Rights Watch (HRW) disclosed that Thuzar Maung, her husband, and their three children were abducted around 4.30am.

The incident was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV), and witness statements are available, as per HRW Asia director Elaine Pearson.

Pearson expressed concerns about the safety of Thuzar and her family, highlighting that the abduction appeared to be a premeditated operation. She urged the Malaysian government to immediately locate the family and ensure their safety.

Thuzar fled Myanmar in 2015 and, along with her family, was granted refugee status by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Malaysia.
