Ink inter-party peace deal after state elections for political stability, urges Bersih
SHAH ALAM - Election watchdog Bersih has called on the Unity Government and Perikatan Nasional (PN) to sign an inter-coalition peace deal to ensure political stability as soon six state elections are over on Aug 12, regardless of the election outcomes.
In the statement, Bersih said it is time for another inter-party agreement like the Political Transformation and Stability MoU signed by the Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri administration and Pakatan Harapan in September 2021, which saw 13 months of political stability.
“The MOU resulted in the passing of anti-hopping law and some measures of parliamentary reform.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Parliamentary Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin made their commitment to negotiate for a peace deal post-state elections.
“This can assure not just voters of the six states but also the general public, domestic and foreign investors alike, that Malaysia can focus on economic rejuvenation by crushing continuous rumours of midterm change of government that undermines political stability and market confidence," he said in a statement.
Bersih further urged the unity government and the Opposition to engage the leadership of Parliament Speaker and Senate President to ensure trust-building and laying the groundwork for progress.
"It is crucial that a respect for the outcomes of elections and government formation is accompanied by a level playing field that enables the Opposition to compete in a constructive and professional manner.
"This will allow the Government and Opposition to focus on policy and governance instead of engaging in divisive identity politics such as race, religion, and royalty (3Rs)," it said.
