Traffic obstruction among highest offences in KL

KUALA LUMPUR - Parking vehicles at undesignated areas and obstructing the traffic are among the most highest offences detected during the “Respect Traffic Laws” operation carried out since July 3.

The city traffic enforcement and investigations department (JSPT) said a total of 38,572 summonses were issued related to offences of obstructing the traffic.

“Traffic obstruction offence covers either motorcycles or other vehicles such as cars that are parked on sidewalks, thus disrupting the flow of traffic.

“Besides that, among the other common offences recorded were blocking the pedestrian walkway with 3,044 summonses issued, not having a driver's license with 2,159 summonses,” he told Sinar Harian, today.

He said the operation which has been carried out for 13 days aimed to educate road users to always obey the traffic law.

“This operation is to educate road users to be more prudent in driving.

“In addition, compliance with road safety aspects is also emphasised to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.

On July 3, city police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the operation will be conducted for a month until July 31 focusing on three offences which were red-light running, making an illegal U-turn and stopping in a yellow box junction.

“This operation is carried out to further increase the awareness of road users in complying with traffic laws which are often taken lightly.

“The operation is carried out during peak hours to educate the public to respect and uphold the law.

“Peak hours or not, offences are still being committed by road users so often such as running a red light and stopping the vehicle in a yellow box” he said.
