Baby girl dies after allegedly abused by caregiver
NOOR AINON MOHAMED YUSOFIPOH - A six-month-old baby girl who was admitted to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in a coma on Wednesday has died, believed to have been abused by her caregiver.
Ipoh district police chief ACP Yahaya Hassan said that the baby girl was found to have bruises on her body when she was admitted to the hospital.
“The hospital suspected that the victim’s injuries were the result of abuse, and we subsequently arrested a 52-year-old local woman who was the victim’s full-time nanny,” he said in a statement today.
The suspect was remanded for four days until Monday for investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001.
However, the investigation into the case was reclassified as a murder case when the victim was confirmed dead while being treated at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ward at around 2.51pm on Friday.
“The autopsy results show that the victim’s cause of death was a head injury caused by a blunt object,” Yahaya said.
The case is being investigated according to Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
