KUALA LUMPUR - Police managed to recapture a man within four hours after he escaped custody at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old man escaped at 9.40am when the police were transferring him to a police truck to be taken to Jalan Duta Court Complex to be charged in a case related to Section 39A of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspect was arrested at 1.50pm in Jinjang.

"Imagine that in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city, it is challenging for us (the police) to track down and recapture the suspect, but we managed to arrest the man within four hours after he fled," he said at a press conference after attending the police’s monthly assembly here on Wednesday.

Shuhaily said a probe was also conducted against the six policemen who were involved in the process of transferring the suspect to court.

"We are investigating whether this incident was due to negligence on the police’s part or whether the suspect was so cunning that he managed to escape.

"Investigation papers have been opened, and further action will be taken against the policemen involved if they are found to be negligent," he said.

Shuhaily also expressed his appreciation to the Dang Wangi police, who acted swiftly to conduct a search operation (Op Cari) and re-arrested the suspect.
