KUALA LUMPUR - Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to address the anticipated 20 per cent increase in the price of goods in August.

Its vice president Datuk G Parameswaran said the prime minister needs to resolve this matter immediately because the price increase will greatly burden the people.

"If the prices of all goods, especially food, continue to rise, what options do we have other than enduring the hardship of purchasing and feeding ourselves?" Parameswaran questioned.

He further criticised ministers for focusing on gaining popularity and finding faults with the Opposition instead of formulating ideas to develop the national economy.

Parameswaran added that the increase in the price of goods is expected to occur in August or September, leading to a decrease in the purchasing power of the people.

"Just two months after the prices of chicken and eggs rose, we now hear reports that all prices will increase. How will the people survive this?" he expressed concern.

Parameswaran stressed the need for the government to take this issue seriously to prevent the people, especially the B40 and M40 groups, from suffering.

He also urged the public to recognise that the current government has not prioritised addressing the people's problems.
