DAP may win 90 per cent seats contested in upcoming polls, says think tank
SHAH ALAM - DAP is expected to be in a comfortable position in retaining all 48 state seats they previously won in the elections, with a potential victory rate of up to 90 percent.
Ilham Centre's Executive Director Hisommudin Bakar said the projection could be a reality, considering that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition seats are predominantly in urban areas, where the majority of voters are non-Malays.
He also added that the support of non-Malay voters for the PH coalition can serve as an additional advantage to the success of DAP.
"The voting pattern of Chinese voters show they still supports PH. By looking at the trend of previous state elections in Melaka and Johor, DAP is still able to survive in the seats they are contesting.
"Based on the results of the last GE15, it also showed the support of non-Malay voters was very high for PH, and PN got a low percentage, he told Sinar.
It indicates that the opposition coalition, represented by Gerakan will face challenges in dominanted DAP in the state seats for the time being.
On Saturday, DAP's party's secretary-general, Anthony Loke said his party will field candidates in all state assembly seats in the Aug 12 elections.
In total, DAP won 48 state seats in four states in the previous 14th General Election (GE14), this include 19 in Penang, 16 in Selangor, 11 in Negeri Sembilan and 2 in Kedah.
Hisommudin further added that around 10 per cent of the seats that are expected to be affected involve areas where at least 45 per cent of the voters are Malays.
He also said that the only factor that could change the situation is if the turnout percentage for Chinese voters is low, while Malay voters have a high turnout.
