SHAH ALAM - MCA's decision not to contest in the upcoming state elections is aimed at addressing the escalating racial tensions in the country.

According to the party's vice-president Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, the alleged racial rhetoric propagated by DAP and Pas to their respective supporters has led to polarisation after the last general election.

"DAP has successfully convinced non-Muslim voters that Umno is a racist party, which has caused them to harbor animosity towards MCA.

"Now, DAP is collaborating with Umno and targeting Pas to instill fear in non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese community.

"This situation has resulted in racial and religious polarisation, with Malays supporting Perikatan Nasional (PN) and non-Malays generally supporting Pakatan Harapan," Ti wrote on his Facebook today.

Ti also pointed out that MCA believes this polarisation will persist and worsen as race and religion continue to be exploited for political gain in the lead-up to the state elections.

To address this concerning situation, MCA has made the decision to abstain from participating in the elections and instead position itself as a mediator to foster better racial relations in the country.

"MCA's decision not to engage in the divisive nature of the elections that exploits race and religion will help alleviate the racial and religious tensions that are threatening the harmony of our nation," Ti stressed.

He also called for an end to the politicking of race and religion for electoral purposes, emphasising that such tactics ultimately harm the people.

On Wednesday, MCA and MIC announced that they would not contest in the upcoming polls on August 12.

However, they expressed their willingness to support candidates from Barisan Nasional.
