SHAH ALAM - A video of a cow being tied too tightly around its neck before being sacrificed for the recent Eid Al Adha celebrations is going viral on social media.

In the video it could clearly be seen that the cow had already died allegedly due to strangulation, but was slaughtered anyways.

In the two-minute video uploaded by Hafiz Firdaus on his Facebook page, it shows that the cow was no longer moving and had his tongue sticking out from its mouth.

During the religious ceremony, names of those participating in the sacrifice will be read out followed by a prayer before the cow is slaughtered, in the video however the cow that was being slaughtered did not move, nor bled or made any sounds.

In Islam, before slaughtering a cow, the condition for slaughtering is that the sacrificed animal needs to be alive with 'Hayah Mustaqirah', which means the cow should be slaughtered while alive and in the qucikest way possible.

Muslims are also forbidden to eat the meat of carnivores and animals that died due to illness, injury, stunning, poisoning, or slaughtering without invoking the name of God.

Adha in Eid Al Adha basically ” means “sacrifice” in Arabic. Most families who can afford to do so will slaughter an animal — perhaps a sheep, goat, cow or camel. The animal will be blindfolded, gently put down and then slaughtered while the name of God is praised. The meat is consumed by the family and also distributed to neighbors and to the needy.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), when contacted by Sinar Daily, however, said they did not receive any reports lodged on the matter.

Meanwhile, another Jakim spokesman, when contacted, said the department had no comments on the matter.

This video has raised the alarm for social media users, with 32 thousand views at the time of writing.

Social media user Ekin Asy commented:"By looking at the condition of the cow, it shows that the cow dies before being slaughtered. May we all learn and add to our knowledge"

Another social media user, Azlina Yaakob, responded: "Before slaughtering, the cow is dead."
