Govt urged to introduce new ID card to tackle power abuse
AISYAH BASARUDDINSHAH ALAM - The government is urged to improve the system and technology within the National Registration Department (NRD) to combat corruption and abuse of power.
One of the proposed measures is the introduction of a new identification card with advanced security features, as the existing cards have been susceptible to hacking after nearly 15 years in use.
Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) president Jais Abdul Karim said there's an urgent need for an efficient and up-to-date management system to minimise opportunities for misconduct.
To address the issue of corruption, Jais stressed the importance of implementing robust internal inspections, audits, and performance evaluations, alongside transparent procedures.
"There is a need for a reliable and secure channel for reporting corruption or embezzlement, ensuring protection for whistleblowers from any form of harassment or retaliation," he said in a statement today.
While enforcement and punishment play a crucial role in upholding justice and preventing crimes, Jais highlighted the importance of transparency, fairness, and independence from political interference in these processes.
"Building a culture of integrity among NRD staff is deemed essential," he added.
Jais concluded that these measures should be implemented comprehensively and consistently, with the support of all parties within the NRD, to make corruption prevention and the elimination of abuse of power a top priority.
