SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is treating the issue of corruption in a recent incident involving a Chinese national at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with utmost seriousness.

According to a source, a comprehensive investigation is currently underway by the MACC to verify the facts surrounding the matter.

So far, the source revealed that three witness statements have been recorded, including one from a minister who was involved in the incident and two key witnesses who are Chinese nationals.

"The immigration personnel implicated in this matter will be summoned for questioning today," the source said on Tuesday.

In a related matter, the MACC has also identified a person suspected to be the intermediary in the case, which revolved around the "settlement" of an issue concerning a foreign tourist who allegedly did not meet the entry requirements set by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

"We are actively tracking down the individual who is believed to be an agent and is said to have demanded a bribe of RM18,000 to settle the case," the source said.

Meanwhile, when contacted, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

He urged all parties not to engage in speculation and to give the MACC time to complete the investigation into the incident.
