SHAH ALAM - DAP says it will uphold the fundamental rights in the Federal Constitution, including respecting the position of Islam as the religion of the Federation, while at the same time allowing the peaceful and harmonious practice of other religions, as stated in Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution.

Its secretary-general Anthony Loke said DAP has never questioned the status of Islam as the religion of the Federation, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

"I am deeply disappointed with Dr Mahathir's allegation that DAP would threaten the Prime Minister.

"Has he forgotten that during his tenure as the Prime Minister from May 2018 to February 2020, he was supported by 42 DAP MPs? Has DAP ever withdrawn its support or threatened his position?," he asked the former prime minister.

This comes after Dr Mahathir Mohamad said DAP with its 40 parliamentary seats in the current government would threaten Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to change the status of Islam as the official religion to a non-official religion in the Federal Constitution.

Loke said this is an irresponsible act.

"Since the country achieved independence, Malaysia has been known as a multicultural nation that can coexist peacefully.

"Has Tun forgotten about his vision to create a Bangsa Malaysia through Vision 2020? Why is he taking such a hostile stance towards the multicultural society in Malaysia today?," he asked.

Loke further said that DAP will not be hostile to any race.

"We will continue to serve the country and play a role in building a united society based on the principles of the Rukun Negara," Loke said, adding that Malaysia will remain as a member of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) under the unity government.
