Staggering 5.1 million vehicles expected to choke highways during Raya Haji holidays

DENGKIL - A staggering 5.1 million vehicles are expected to be on highways during the Hari Raya Haji festivities.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the influx of vehicles was expected from June 27 until July 3.

He said several measures have been put in place to minimise a long snarl.

“No construction and repair work involving the closure of highway lanes will be carried out till July 3.

"The smart lane or contra lane would be activated based on the need," he said.

"We will ensure that all toll collection systems are functioning properly by deploying toll staff to assist users experiencing any issues," he said this during a press conference, here, today.

Also present was Malaysian Highway Board Chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias.

Overall the daily average of traffic involving the North-South Highway was expected to reach up to two million vehicles.

The KL-Karak Highway and the East Coast 1 Highway would each reach up to 170,000 vehicles in a day. - Awani
