Domestic violence cases in Selangor are on the rise
SHAH ALAM - A total of 423 cases of domestic violence crimes occurred in Selangor for the first four months this year.
Selangor Chief Police Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the number of domestic violence crimes recorded in Selangor in 2020 was 944 cases, while in 2021 was 1,713 and in 2022 1,284 cases.
He said although the statistics obtained were relatively high compared to other states, this is not a true reflection of the current increase in domestic crime.
"The number recorded is quite large because Selangor has a high population and density compared to other states, in addition to the increasing awareness factor among the public.
"People now have a high level of awareness and are no longer afraid to make a police report compared to before.
"Before the victims were afraid that it would end in divorce or were afraid of their respective partners, but it has changed now because they want protection," he said in a press conference today.
He said this after the Selangor Police Domestic Violence Campaign programme held at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK).
The ceremony was officiated by the Selangor State Public Health, Unity, Women and Family Exco Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.
Hussein added that domestic violence crimes occur as a result of work pressure, disagreements and financial factors.
He said most of the victims who are women get counseling services from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), the hospital and from the police department in the state of Selangor itself.
He explained that not only did they get physical treatment, the victims were also given psychological help for emotional stability.
"We at IPK Selangor will continue these awareness programmes and hope that it will bring a great benefits to the public.
"Members and officers involved in this programme will have the best knowledge to help the victims out there," he said.
Meanwhile, when asked on Selangor PDRM's preparations to face the state elections, Hussein said the police have been preparing for the past month.
He explained that preparations were not only made from the aspect of preparing the police force, but logistical requirements such as the vehicles to be used.
He said almost half of the 15,000 members of the Selangor police force will be deployed in the next state election.
When asked about the hot location for the Selangor state elections, he said that the matter would be shared in the near future.
