Outcry on social media as non-Muslim woman receives fine for dress code violation

SHAH ALAM - A women's clothing store owner in Kota Baru has been compounded by enforcement officers from the municipal council on the grounds that she was dressed inappropriately, NST reports.
The local daily verified the incident with the council after a photo of the fine went viral on social media, revealing that the recipient was a non-Muslim.
This stirred a reaction among some social media users, as the Pas-led state of Kelantan has consistently stated that its Syariah-inspired by-laws would not impact non-Muslims.
The Kota Baru Municipal Council president Rosnazli Amin has allegedly confirmed that the council officers issued the fine to the woman during their inspection of her shop located on Jalan Merbau in Kota Baru.
According to Rosnazli, the woman was found wearing shorts "in public places," leading to the issuance of the fine.
He further explained that the fine was given based on an offense under By-Law 34(2)(b) of the council's Business and Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019.
Rosnazli defended the by-laws, stating that they have long been in effect and are understood by everyone, including non-Muslims.
