'Strength, track record are factors behind Pas's dominance' - Analyst
SHAH ALAM - Perikatan Nasional's decision to allocate more seats to Pas for the upcoming state election was due to its strength and track record.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) political analyst Profesor Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani said following this, Pas will be seen contesting in more Malay majority areas on the East Coast, where the party has had strong influence since the 15th general election (GE15).
"Bersatu is definitely strong on the East Coast. The same goes for the central and southern regions of the Peninsula.
Pas is also stronger in the northern region. Hence, without Pas, I think there is no hope for Bersatu to form a government.
"Therefore in this context and in reality, Pas is definitely the dominant party in PN, as wished by Pas," he said to Sinar Harian.
On the other hand, Mohd Azizuddin said Gerakan stands a low chance of attracting non-Malay supporters to join PN.
"This is because Gerakan has the potential to attract voters in Penang, not in any other state.
"Now non-Malay voters are strongly supporting DAP. So even if Gerakan has a chance, it would only be in Penang.
"But even in Penang, it would be difficult, as many areas in Penang are contested by DAP," he added.
